Hate Crime Prevention Project
The Hate Crime Prevention Project aims to prevent hate crimes and improve knowledge about, reporting on, and investigation of bias-motivated incidents across University of Colorado campuses, including CU Boulder, CU Denver, and UC Colorado Springs. The project will develop and test messages on hate crime prevention and bystander reporting to educate and empower CU students, staff, and faculty. In addition, the project will provide training to the campus and law enforcement officials investigating hate crimes in the community.
Hate crimes are crimes that are committed based on a biased motive, like hatred of a certain religious group or race of people. Research suggests that official data on hate crimes significantly underestimates the prevalence of these crimes in the United States.
This work is supported by a Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crime Prevention Program Grant from the Bureau of Justice Assistance.
